Obituary for Lenora Mae Schuler (Cassell)
Lenora Mae (Cassell) Schuler, 92, passed away October 9, 2019. She was born on December 5, 1926 to Charles and Lillie Mae Cassell in Faxon, Oklahoma. Lenora married Elton Matthew Schuler on November 15, 1946 . They were married 41 years before “Buddy’s” passing in 1987. In addition, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Janis Boone, her sisters: Joy Matthews and Christine Wilson, and her brothers: Edsel Cassell and Donald Cassell. There is quite the heavenly reunion happening this week. Four sons survive her, including: Steve Schuler (and his wife Linda), David Schuler (and his wife Janet), Lindsey Schuler (and his wife Sherri), and Scott Schuler. Her grandchildren: Chris Schuler (and his wife Krysta), Rebecca Powell (and her husband Dan), Angela Eding (and her husband Petr), Jared Schuler (and his wife Heather), Elysia Combs (and her husband Jon), Jessica Boone, Savannah Schuler, David Mead (and his wife Ally), and Julie Stager (and her husband Paul). She absolutely enjoyed eating ice cream with her 16 great-grandchildren.
As a young girl, she loved visiting her grandfather on the farm. Riding horses, hauling water from the creek to the house, fishing and playing in the creek. She also loved singing and playing dolls. Her favorite being a Shirley Temple Doll. In fifth grade she learned to dance and performed in a “follies” presentation. Junior High found her singing in an operetta. In high school, she lettered in Volleyball and won “general all around sports participation” award. She loved dancing and frequently talked about dancing at the USO during the war in 1945.
Later in life, she loved collecting bells, spoons, clothes, and pictures. Although frequently when she took pictures, she chopped the heads off of her tall sons. It was quite the family joke to see the developed pictures and see how many headless family members were there.
Lenora loved holidays. Valentine’s Day wearing red and attending church choir parties, Fourth of July with family picnics and firecrackers, Halloween with more choir parties and dressing up in costumes, Thanksgiving and Christmas were always favorites surrounded by family.
She also loved old classic movies. Her favorites included, Bing Crosby, Lucille Ball, and Bette Davis. She probably enjoyed them because they always had a happy romantic ending. She truly loved “Buddy” and they did everything together, church, choir, shopping. Yes, shopping. Lenora did not drive so they did all the grocery shopping and Christmas gift shopping together. We all recognize that one of her greatest accomplishments came late in life, at the age of 61, when she learned how to drive a car. She would tell you that the smartest thing she ever did was marrying a loving and considerate man and raising five healthy, happy children who are well-adjusted and intelligent.
She was a faithful member of South Lee United Methodist Church for 40 years, later transferring her membership to Southern Hills United Methodist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir and attending Sunday School for 32 years. We will all miss her beautiful alto voice, but truly believe she is singing in the heavenly choir and enjoying those “choir” parties.
If she were giving her best advice to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she would say: “Do unto others as you would have them do to you. Take pride in any endeavor that you attempt and don’t give up easily. Do the best that you can at all times. Read the Bible often and love Jesus, as he loves you.” Excellent advice for all of us.
