Obituary for John Luttrell Culbertson

John Luttrell Culbertson passed away peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2019 in Oklahoma City. He was born in Enid, Oklahoma on May 4, 1933, the son of Olin and Pearl (Luttrell) Culbertson. John was a lifelong resident of Oklahoma City, graduating from Classen High School in 1950. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1954 with a BS in Industrial Engineering. At OU, he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. After graduation, John served two years in the Air Force eventually retiring as a Major in the Air Force Reserves. He moved to Bartlesville where he met and married the love of his life, Cynthia Straight Culbertson, on August 2, 1958. They subsequently returned to Oklahoma City where he was employed as a computer systems analyst by Univac and Tinker Air Force Base, retiring in 1998. He and Cynthia lived in Windsor Hills where they made many lifelong friends and enjoyed working on the Neighborhood Association Board. He was a lifetime member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, serving in various leadership positions and as a driver for Meals on Wheels. He also volunteered at Presbyterian Urban Missions and served on the Oklahoma City Bond Commission. John was a loving husband, father and grandfather, coaching both of his sons in baseball and introducing them to his love of the OU Sooners. He loved his visits to Houston to see his grandchildren for holidays and always looked forward to seeing his granddaughters’ dance recitals. When he could no longer drive, he faithfully followed his grandson’s basketball games via the internet. John had a passion for history, the Civil War in particular. In retirement, he traveled widely, visiting numerous national parks and battlefield sites. His love of family led to genealogical research and he loved visiting with his numerous cousins as he investigated his ancestors’ homes. John moved to Epworth Villa and 2012, making numerous friends there. Special thanks to everyone on the Epworth Villa Assisted Living and Health Services teams. John was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Cynthia. He is survived by son Craig and wife Darva of Edmond and son David and wife Cindy of Houston; his grandchildren Brooke Lessman and her husband Garrett of Boston, John Culbertson and Blair Culbertson of Houston and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial service will be 3:00 p.m., Monday, December 23, 2019 at Covenant Presbyterian Church 10100 Ridgeview Dr. Private interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 10100 Ridgeview Drive, OKC 73120 or the charity of your choice.
