I remember when Larry first began working here at the college. He had the most inspiring smile and the greatest words of kindness for everyone he interacted with. He was always interested in how you were doing and never left a conversation without making you laugh. He saw the good in everyone he met and felt that life was great. He will be missed dearly by those of us who were so fortunate to have known him while he was here. God Bless you Larry for making me a better person. My prayers are with his family.

I have been a student at OCCC since fall of 2008, and during my time there I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Lundy a number of times. Whether I needed a spare Bandaid or I was returning some miscellaneous object I'd found on campus to the lost and found, Mr. Lundy never failed to send me out that door smiling and laughing. It was always such a delight to see he and his wife on their romantic picnic lunches in the College Union. It warmed my heart to see such passionate love that I know will continue forever. Although I never met Mr. Lundy's family, they are all in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you all.

I do not believe Larry will be missed; I believe Larry IS missed by us all. I am sad for Debbie, Jennifer and Tim, but they are all much stronger than I think I could be in the same situation. It was wonderful to hear all people who spoke at his funeral to relate their memories and stories about Larry and ALL had nothing but positive things to say. One speaker said it best when he said that for once it was great to hear people speak of someone without having to exaggerate to make that person seem better than they really were. Larry's life required no such exaggeration. I was also pleased to hear how he impacted the lives of so many people in even more ways than I was aware of. I cannot help but feel we've all lost something special with his passing, but Heaven has gained someone special. In the end, that is the most important thing. If anyone ever earned a place in Heaven, Larry Lee Lundy earned his.

Debbie and family, I am deeply sorry for your loss and wish you healing prayers and support from family and friends as you make your way through this difficult passage. I have only had the privilege of getting to know Larry over the past year and a half, but he was unfailingly kind and cheerful in all of my interactions with him. Always ready with a smile, Larry was one of the "rocks" we counted on in our Student Support Services office. I know that he was beloved by faculty, staff and students. Although a church commitment will probably prevent me from attending his service, please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Debbie and family, I had the honor of working with Larry for about 4 years at the college. Just by his character alone I knew that he was a Christian man who loved his family tremendously. He often spoke of you all with a smile on his face- the pride he felt for you all was apparent to everyone who knew him. I left the college 3 years ago, but I know everyone there will feel a immense void at not seeing him every day - missing his encouraging spirit and kind heart. I am praying that God will give you comfort and strength in the days ahead and knowing that we will see Larry again in Heaven! Larry was a very special person who could always make me laugh. He talked me through a few serious asthma attacks by helping me calm down and do corrective breathing. I felt safe knowing Larry was on campus, and he will be greatly missed. Debbie, you are in my prayers.

I work at the OCCC Wellness Center. Larry often came by and chatted for awhile. I would ask him how he was doing, and his reply was always just another day in paradise. He was so helpful when we had kids injured, he would come over and be so patient with them. I will sorely miss him and his constant smile and great attitude.

I first met Larry the day I came in to be fitted for my uniforms a few days before I started to work in the Safety & Security department. I had not met him before and did not know who he was. But when I came into the office, he greeted me by name and welcomed me to the department, stating that he was glad I was here. That made quite a first impression on me. I would soon learn that was classic Larry Lundy. He was that way to everyone. He seemed to know everyone who worked at the college, and treated them all as lifelong friends. If Larry knew about something you did outside of work, no matter how trivial, he would ask you about it when he saw you next. He cared about people and always made them feel at ease. He was always a generous with his time, and I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count the times he offered to buy me breakfast. Larry took an interest in you and the things you cared about. I have two small dogs that are like family to me. Larry immediately sensed that, and asked me about them at least once a week, and he took the time to look at every picture I ever showed to him without complaint, even though I showed him so many of them. Other than the occasional anecdote, Larry didn’t speak about himself all that often. He was more interested in talking about his family. He was very proud of his children, and he loved his wife Debbie like they were newlyweds. Whenever he worked on Saturdays, you could count on Debbie dropping by the office, and they would eat breakfast or just talk for a bit. They were not only husband and wife, they were best friends who clearly loved each other and had as good a marriage as anyone I’ve ever known. In an age where divorce is as common as changing a flat tire, I could not imagine Larry or Debbie ever considering such a thought. I lost track of the number of people who stopped in the Security office, and the number of people who stopped me because I was in uniform, just to ask how Larry was doing during his final days. People that I didn’t think knew who Larry was stopped me to ask about him. I went to say goodbye to Larry at the hospital on his final day; Debbie told me that over 150 people had come to see him. The number surprised me at first, but after 1/15th of a second, I wasn’t surprised at all. If the number of people who care about you is a measure of life success, then Larry was a very successful person. It goes without saying I will hate not seeing Larry in the office each morning. I am grateful that I cannot recall ever having one cross word with him. One Sunday morning about seven months ago, I stopped by to see him because my shift had ended and he’d just arrived on campus to work a special event. We talked for a while about life in general. I don’t like to get emotional or sentimental with people, but I told him that even though I don’t say it often enough, I am glad to know him and to work with him. I told him I considered him more a friend than a co-worker. Of course, he said the same to me and he couldn’t have been more sincere. My lasting impression about Larry is even stronger than the first...as a good friend and family man. My only regret is that three years is all the time I'll get to work with him. When I think of him, I think of him smiling. That’s why I selected the picture of him above, and that’s the way I will always remember him.

I will always remember Larry as the kind and gentle person he always was. Larry consistently had a smile and encouraging kind words for everyone he met. He always made a point of talking to my boys and really having a conversation with them, of course while offering and sharing his sugar free candy from that jar on his desk. I will greatly miss Larry and will never forget what an impression he left on my family. Our love and prayers and sincere sympathy are with his family. Story shared: Larry and Poetry

I first got to know Larry when I took over teaching a literature class from a colleague who was too ill to continue, and Larry was a student in the class! As is often the case, the students were all rather skeptical about my ways of doing things which were very different from the previous teacher. I announced to the class that night that we would pick up at the point in the syllabus with the study of poetry--most groaned but didn't resist. After class was over, Larry approached me and said he didn't like studying poetry very much. I listened to his comments about old, dead, stuffy poets--I'm not sure why he had the idea we would be studying such poetry. I encouraged him to keep an open mind, though, and promised him that we'd try to make it interesting.

After four weeks of reading, writing and discussing poetry, he sheepishly admitted that my choice of poems and poets were "not so bad" and he thought maybe I'd like to read something. He handed me a sheet of paper on which he had written a bit of verse. I don't recall the words, but I could tell his poem was from his heart and he had something to say. Over the years since then, he has shared a few other poems that he'd written. A few years ago, when he and Debbie celebrated one of their anniversaries, he proudly announced that he all sorts of plans including a poem for his wife. I hope that each of his poems will be found and treasured by his family.

Story shared: Getting to Know Larry

The Recreation and Fitness Department rely heavily on Safety and Security to provide Security/First Responders to work our events. The officers are not assigned the additional hours, they sign up for them. It seems Larry was one of our old faithfuls, and has worked at least one shift for every event. The first event I worked with Larry was in early May. Larry asked if I had "Big Plans" for Saturday evening when the meet was over. I told Larry that although it was my 20 something anniversary, both my husband and I worked that day and although we celebrate every day, we would probably do something special in the upcoming week. Larry's eyes brightened. He shared with me how long he and Debbie had been married, what a wonderful woman she was. You could see the love in his eyes and hear the passion in his voice. Larry said each day he grew more in love with his wife than he had been the day before. She still made his heart flutter every time he looked at her. Then Larry talked about his kids. He was so proud of them. They were young adults making some decisions for the first time, and he enjoyed watching them use the knowledge and skills they had already acquired as they struggled to make the perfect decision. Larry shared on that day, and just about every day after how great his life was. He said nobody deserved to have such a wonderful life with so many blessings, but for some reason God chose him. If you knew Larry, then you know that those were not just words, he truly believed it. Larry didn't know a stranger, he never panicked, but always seemed to have a calming effect as he was providing care to the swimmers. He was always smiling, and offering me little bits of encouragement when things weren't perfect. I will miss Larry, his wonderful attitude, his smile, his caring manner and his words of encouragement. I will think of Larry often, and pray for his beautiful family and friends he left behind.

He died on Easter weekend..a time when we celebrate the resurrection of Christ. We can rejoice in knowing that Larry spent his first Easter in the very presence of Christ. Larry was a lovely, gentle big bear of a man who was always positive and upbeat and had only kind words for anyone. He had a very perceptive knowledge of people and situations that gave him an aura of calmness. He was quick to respond to call of duty here at the college but always with diplomacy and tact. He didn't need to tell people of his faith and love for God, he lived it. I loved Larry as a friend and coworker and I will miss him greatly.

My girlfriends and I used to watch adoringly as Mr & Mrs Lundy had lunch together in the college union. Mrs. Lundy would pack a table cloth and battery powered table lamp and create a little picnic-like mood. It was so refreshing to see lasting love and affection. We do not know either of you personally, but your lives touched ours without you even knowing it. My sincere condolences to the family. May God embrace you during this difficult time.

Larry you will be greatly missed. You were such a good friend to me. Always was there for your family and friends. Larry and Debbie loved each other so much. I will miss Larry a great deal. Everytime he had something to share he would make a special call to me and I do greatly appreciate that. There were times I had no lunch because of lack of money and Debbie & Larry always had just a little extra. I love this family and I could never repay them for what they have done for me.
